Carbon charges, basic income and global justice

July 30, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm UTC+0

This webinar explores the proposal that carbon charges – and the dividends paid from them – should be international.

About this Event

This webinar is aimed at activists, academics, policy-makers and all who have an interest in global justice and sustainability.

Carbon taxes and charges are usually proposed as national schemes, with the revenues kept within the country. Given the international impacts of burning carbon, we ask whether it is right that the highest polluters get to hold onto the biggest dividends.

This webinar discusses an alternative – International Carbon Charge and Dividend, along with a cap on total carbon extraction. This proposal aims to directly address the climate emergency in a way that is consistent with climate justice.

As well as directly addressing the climate emergency, carbon dividends have significant potential to tackle extreme poverty and chip away at inequality between the Global North and South.

This proposal therefore provides an opportunity to tackle the world’s greatest emergencies – extreme poverty and climate change – through a single, practical scheme. Join us to hear how it would work, and how you can help shift climate debates to incorporate global justice.

Places are limited to 100 and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis on the day, so please arrive on time to ensure you can join us. You will be emailed the link to join the webinar in advance of the session.
